About Unscramble IQ
Solve the letters. Learn the words. A word unscrambler that adapts to your age, your goal, and how you want to learn.
Why we built it
Most word unscramblers online were built with a single user in mind: an adult playing a word game. The interface, the dictionary, and the result ranking all reflect that assumption. The same tool that helps a competitive Scrabble player is not the right tool for a third grader doing homework, a high schooler studying for the SAT, a teacher preparing a worksheet, a poet hunting for a line-end word, or a lawyer searching for the precise term.
Unscramble IQ is built on the observation that those people need fundamentally different tools — even though they all start with the same input. Type the letters, choose your mode, and the dictionary, ranking, definitions, and example sentences all change to match what you're trying to do.
The seven modes
The site has seven modes, each tuned to a different audience and a different goal:
- Kid Mode — age-appropriate filtering, kid-friendly definitions, safe for unsupervised use.
- Student Mode — grade-leveled vocabulary, definitions, example sentences, and a built-in writing tool.
- Advanced Vocabulary Mode — sophisticated, professional words for writers, lawyers, and academics.
- Game Mode — Scrabble and Words With Friends tile scoring, bingo checks, hook plays.
- Tournament Mode — competitive Scrabble dictionary (TWL and Collins) with Q-without-U plays and rare bingos.
- Teacher Mode — printable worksheets in under a minute, grade-aligned word banks.
- Creative Mode — evocative, rare, and poetic words for songwriters, poets, and storytellers.
How it works
The unscrambler runs entirely in your browser. Type your letters, the engine permutes them against a dictionary of common English words, and returns every valid result. Each mode then applies its own filters and ranking on top: Kid Mode strips out anything above your reading level; Game Mode sorts by tile score; Teacher Mode lays the results out as a printable worksheet. The same letters in two modes give you two different worlds.
What we believe
Three small ideas underpin the whole site:
First, that a good tool should adapt to its user, not the other way around. The user shouldn't have to mentally translate a result list designed for someone else.
Second, that an unscrambler can do more than solve puzzles. Every word in a result list is a chance to learn something — a definition, an example, a connection to a word you already know.
Third, that this should be free and accessible. No accounts, no downloads, no paywalls, no per-day limits. Type letters, get words. Anyone with a browser can use the whole site, today.
The technology
Unscramble IQ is a single-page web application built with React, served as static HTML on a content delivery network. The dictionary is bundled with the page; the unscrambling happens in your browser, not on a server. That's why it's fast, private, and works without an internet connection once loaded.
